                                           3 Words in the Bible

                           Piety - Orthodoxy - Apostasy

John 7:17

 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? 16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. 17  If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. 18  He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

   “He shall know of the doctrine” a person that is beyond natural knowledge and speculation. A person that has assistance of the Spirit and can reduce the doctrine into practice.

Where was the crossroad in your life when you intersected Bible knowledge and Bible works / good works?

Piety - Orthodoxy – Apostasy

KJV           Greek             Greek

Is the pursuit to doctrinal accuracy an unspiritual endeavor?

1 Tim. 1:3-4

  As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.

       **We know what the Bible says about the pursuit of fables and foolishness.

Piety

Piety (eusebeo/eusebeo) means godliness and devout in duty and obligation.

   It’s used in the New Testament scriptures, Acts and 1 Timothy.

** There are a number of Greek verbs used in relation to what worship should be. The Greek word (eusebeo/eusebeo) in Acts 17:23 is translated “Worship”

2 Thess. 3:7For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you

“Purity in the pulpit produces piety in the pew.” - (Author unknown)

John Broadus preached to Gen. Lee and 5000 confederate soldiers

“The Pleasures of Piety” Prov. 3:17

1) Consistent piety secures respect and confidence. {Most Baptist today answer “I don’t know”}

2) Riches do not make a man pious & often have an adverse effect.

       It (piety) deters from vice & vice is commonly expensive.

3) Peace in the Spirit comes from reconciliation with God.

                                                          Orthodoxy

Orthodoxy (orthos/orthos) means rightly believe or straight.

    The Greek word orthos is in the original writing but translated “straight” in the KJV.

** John the Baptist prepared a straight path (Matt. 3:3)

Heb. 12:13And make straight (orthos) paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed

In Order:

Orthodoxy = rightly believe

Orthopraxis= rightly doing

2 Tim 3:15-17And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Note: Remember we have to “make disciples”

   Disciple: a learner (thought accompanied by endeavor)

What sets the standard for piety (devotion to the Lord) also sets the standard for orthodoxy….and measures the distance of apostasy! (Bro. King)

Apostasy

Apostate (apostasia/apostasia) means falling away.

   The Greek word apostasia is in the original writing but is translated falling away in the KJV

** The apostle Paul uses this word when writing to Thessalonica. An anxious people ripe for the sin of pragmatism (vain philosophy) see Col. 2:8

Paul comforted :

 2 Thess. 2:2That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.”

Note: At the same time warned them about the evil of “falling away” = apostasy

Note: Only Baptist can apostasies (Only Baptist have the truth to begin with.)

Note: It is defiance of the known will of God

Note: Don’t confuse Apostasy & Reprobation

A little known fact about DIVORCE

Matt. 5:31It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

Writing of divorcement = Letter of apostasy

~~~~~~~~~
1 Tim. 4:1 “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;”
I encourage you to be aware of the truth and do not depart.
Disciple: a learner (thought accompanied by endeavor)
John 7:17
If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God
**Take what you believe to be true and put it to work.
If you fall away from the Truth...you know that you’re wrong.
** So…
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth
**We are governed by laws.
The body of the LAW is found in Matthew-Mark-Luke-John
**Study to do what GOD has divinely arranged for us.
Do will of God which is plain to you, and “You shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God.”
